Junior Vasquez @ The Sound Factory 1993

Junior was a bit of an Enigma to most UK clubbers in the early 90s.  He was the undoubted King of NY House at the time.  I would read about the Junior Boys Own crowd, Sasha and the Basics crew making pilgrimages to The Sound Factory in NY.  For the likes of me, who was a student at the time.  Making such trips was not possible.


I had to make do with the all too rare mix tapes coming over from America.  UK Clubbers had to make do with Juniors many remixes and productions.  Unlike his peers he rarely left NY to do DJ gigs over here.  In the late 90s he did a few gigs at Th Ministry of Sound and Cream.  By that point the momentum had gone and reviews were not positive.  


I read one review of his Cream gig.  He got booed because he played Elton Johns rocket Man.  Talk about the wrong record at the wrong place.  He should have played an underground basement style club (Tunnmills would have been ideal).  A venue full of wasted Scousers expecting Big Room house anthems would not 'get' Juniors style.


Drug issues, egos, many dodgy remixes and the late 90s clampdown on the NY club scene curtailed things for Junior.  He has sort of made a bit of a comeback in recent years.  However, he still seems to stick to playimg in NY.


This mix is a classic one from The Sound Factory in 1993.  It showcases his different styles.  You should realise that he would play for 12 plus hours every Sunday morning starting at midnight.  Obviously the 'cool' people would get there after 4am.  Playing for these long stretched meant he could play hours of Wild Pitch, Dream lover looped for 30 minutes and play loads of Madonna records.  Junior pretty much kick started the sound of Progressive House and Techno onto the NY club scene.


As good as this mix is.  It is just a small part of the whole night.
