Live @ Glasshouse 2000.

And here we have another mix from the Hard House room at the Glasshouse.

I always remember my first time at the club.  When it was at Lens / Digbys it was really difficult to get into.  You would routinely see people being turned away or being made to do something silly for Katherine to let you.  A friend of mine had to sing the 'Im a teapot' song.

For my first visit I pretended that I had come up especially from London to visit the club, and was missing a night at Trade in doing so.  It got me in.

Anyway more Glasshouse memories tomorrow.

Enjoy the mix.

Hypertraxx - The Darkside(original mix)

Another favourite of mine from the early hours of The Glasshouse.

Rachel Auburn - Screwdriver (Tidy Trax)

Ah another favourite tune of mine from The Glasshouse. Good to see Rachel having a bit of a comeback in the past year.

Enjoy.

Glasshouse Live Set 10.

I don't really have much details about this mix.  I seem to remember buying it from one of the DJs in the club.  I think it may have been Big Brett.

Enjoy.

Phlash! - Get A Life (Frantic Theme)

After a very funky couple of weeks on the blog. I have decided to toughen up this week and dedicate this week to The Glasshouse in Leeds. In particular the Hard House room.

I moved back down South about 7 years ago. The week I moved The Glasshouse closed down its Hard House room. For me not having a hard room is wrong. but heyho times do change.

Anyway the above video is one of my favourite Hard House tunes ever, and my favourite tune from The Glasshouse. I remember the day I found out what this was called. I was phoning up fellow Glasshousers and playing it down the phone.

I still think it sounds fresh today. It also has one of the greatest piano riffs ever.

Throughout this week I will be posting more videos and rare sets from the club.

Enjoy.

Amnesia Closing Party, Ibiza 1989 (Part One)

ALFREDO is the Greatest DJ Of All Time... by DANNY RAMPLING

Here we have Danny Rampling talking about DJ Alfredo.

Enjoy.

What is Balearic?

Ive just found this fascinating 40 minute radio (I think) programme talking about that age old question.  What is Balearic?  The programme is made up of various Balearic connected people talking about what Balearic music is.

The people speaking include: Fred Deakin, Alfredo, Sally & Steve from A Man Called Adam, Chris Coco, Martin Brew, Pino from Madrid, Nancy Noise, Lenny Ibizarre, Morgan Geist, Lucinda Mason Brown, Rob Da Bank, Moonboots, Txema from Ses Salines, Phil Mison, Pathaan, Hugh Bryder, Balearic Mike, Justin Robertson, Oscar from Trax, Trevor Fung, Emily Nightingale and Nicky Holloway.

DJ Alfredos All Time Balearic Classics. Part 1.

Its Chill Out Sunday here on the blog.  In celebration of the fact that the Ibiza season is in full swing the next few Sundays will be dedicated to the legendary DJ Alfredo.  For those that don't know he was pretty much the inspiration behind Balearic Beat and was the DJ who opened the musical ears of Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold.

The following is a list of DJ Alfredos all time favourite Balearic tunes.

Click on the blue title to see the YOU TUBE video.

Manuel Gottsching: E2E4
This fantastic piece of music was the perfect one to play when the club opened the doors and at the same time putting things in place.
Henry Mancini: Theme from the Pink Panther
The closing theme, the one that left everybody with a smile in her face; totally a surprise the first time I played.
Nina Simone: My Baby Just Cares For Me
A sexy and romantic jazz tune of all time - that made everyone dance, even the owner of Amnesia.
Gilberto Gil Toda: Menhina Bahiana
One of the Brazilian records I play (much later came Belo Horizonte) and the one that everybody asks for.
George Kranz: Din Da Da
Another key track to change tempo and style and for me a fantastic idea, superb! I used to play the acappella version, very short but super strong.
Prince: When Doves Cry
Apparently the most loved record of Prince in every chart, but very new at the time and what can I say, a poem into the most incredible peace of ultra modern funk, direct from the George Clinton school.
The Woodentops: Well Well Well
The revolutionary track that made the club explode. Probably half of the people never understood the words but the track transmited so much power that was enough (thanks to Nello a DJ at the times).
Joe Smooth: Promised Land
Was perfect. The lyrics were talking about the place we were at the moment. We where there, at the promised land!
Liassons Dangereuses: Los niños en el Parque
German track with lyrics in Spanish that was a precursor of many of the techno that came later from Europe.
Icarus: Stone Fox Chase
For me one of the tracks that originate Acid house music: that's my humble opinion.
Hill Street Blues: Theme from the TV Series
As with the Pink Panther theme I use it to close sets - the brothers and sisters reaction was amazing again.
Black Out: Enzo Abitabile
An Italian musician from Naples got this funk house track that I found in a warehouse in Milano and make a big time in Amnesia.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 3.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 3.

You dabbled a bit with Hard House in the late 90s, how did this come about?

It wasn’t really hard house, well not as most people would describe hard house. It was what was coming out of Holland at the time, yes it was tough but was very funky. I loved all those big phat bouncy basslines, Steve Thomas called it comedy house which I though was very funny but you know I had fun with it and again like many genres it had its good and its bad. I did my Alan Thompson slant on hard house! I also collaborated with Steve Thomas as Fruitloop, with Diddy as Bedlam and BK for Nukleuz. I also recorded a few hard house tracks under the name Alter Ego and used this name for these projects so people didn’t get confused with the more housey productions of Alan Thompson.

Favourite 90s DJs.

Smokin’ Jo, she really was a great inspiration to me, an awesome DJ and a dear friend. Danny Tenaglia, Daz Saund, Trevor Rockcliffe and Carl Cox

What is your favourite own production / remix?

Fave track produced, my own production would be 'Do That To Me" was so important that I got this right as it was for the Trade label.

Any regrets?

Non what so ever, I have enjoyed every moment of my DJ career, yes there were times when I hated it and it was tough being on the road away from loved ones and friends but being behind the decks and playing to an audience was what I lived for, it is my passion and to this day nothing compares to being in a club and selecting the music….. its truly magical and I am lucky enough to have been doing now for nearly 20 years.

Many thanks to Alan for giving this interview along with some of the mixes posted this week.  I hope you enjoy the Youtube video above.  Its a collaboration between Alan and Steve Thomas.  Its a personal favourite of mine.  I think it sounds fresher than most new dance music I hear nowadays.

Alan Thompson @ DTPM 1998.

Continuing the Alan Thompson week here is a rare live recording from DTPM.  Its got that fab disco / filter sound that he was playing in the late 90s.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 2.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 2.

Favourite DTPM records.

Again very difficult but a track that became and anthem for me at Fabric was Ministers de la Funk “Believe” a beautiful vocal track with an uplifting piano riff, very much what I played at DTPM when it was at fabric, for me the best years.

What style of music did you play?

I’ve always said and say today, I play house music, sometimes vocal, sometimes deep, sometimes techi but always funky. For me music has to make you want to swing your butt, no mater what genre. Over the years my style has changed with the times, I have always tried to keep ahead with my style but at the same time keep a certain funkier Alan Thompson edge to whatever I play.

Did you ever play abroad? if so where?

Of course. I have been lucky enough in my DJ career to have played all over the World. Spent many summers playing in Ibiza as well as touring extensively in America, Asia and of course Europe.

Do you still play out now? if so where?

Yes I still play but not to the extent I used to. I decided 2 years ago to slow down a bit as I opened a coffee shop here in Sydney. I tend to play at selective clubs in Australia where I get a captive audience for the sound I play.

How did your Trade residency come about?

After I had got confident enough to give out mix tapes 1 of them was being played at a chill out that Laurence Malice attended and he asked for my details. He called me and invited me to play at a 1 off gig he was putting on called Palookaville at Bagleys Warehouse, my set went well and got a great response from the crowd, A few weeks later a slot had come available at Trade and Laurence asked me to fill in, he also tried out several other DJs in this slot but eventually gave the slot to me, the rest as they say is history.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 1.

Alan Thompson Interview Part 1.

What clubs did you play at in the 90s?

So many! I played pretty much every major club in the UK, the obvious being my residencies at Trade & DTPM, my DJ homes as I called them but guest DJ’ed at clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher, Gods Kitchen, Moneypennys, Progress, Hard Times, Enter The Dragon, Sundessential, Federation, The Tunnel and the list goes on. I was also lucky enough to play at all the major festivals too so spent a lot of time on the road dashing from club to club.

How did you get into DJing?

I was first inspired by the new wave of Acid House music that was sweeping the UK in 1987 “The Summer of Love” and embraced this new style of music. Going to clubs like Schoom, Spectrum, Land of Oz and a big favourite of mine and the original gay dance club, Troll. I was very much a part of the scene at the time as a clubber and would wait with anticipation for the weekend to come along. As I got more in to the music I started to watch and listen carefully to what some of the DJs were doing at the time, beat mixing! Up until this point DJs would blend tracks as they called it, not mix as we know it now. The audience’s reaction also caught my attention and this blew me away, at that point I knew that this is what I wanted to do. So I saved and bout myself a pair of technics 1200 (which I still have) amp, mixer and speakers. I taught myself to mix, at the time there were no DJ/music magazines, or even the internet! So I spent the next few months practising and practising until I was confident enough to give out mix tapes!

Favourite clubs to visit in the 90s?

I was playing all over the country every weekend during the 90s so really didn’t have any opportunity to visit clubs myself as a clubber but if I got the chance would got to Carl Cox’s night Ultimate Bass, Full Circle on Sundays and Pushca parties were always a good night….

Favourite Trade records.

Wow, far too many to pick out to be honest but 1 that always springs to mind is Gat Décor “Passion” this for me sums up Trade at its best, a pure classic track that to this day sends shivers up an down my spine. When Tony in particular would drop this in the middle of his set and the lights would go out the whole club would be filled with an electric atmosphere, very special indeed.

Part 2 tomorrow.

Alan Thompson @ Trade 1996.

To start this weeks Alan Thompson week here is a fantastic live mix of him from Trade in 1996.  I always loved the early hours at Trade.  Alan Thompson and Malcolm Duffy deserve more credit than they get.

Trade was never about Hardhouse all night.  The more funky / house / tribal music for the first 3 hours was essential for getting you into the groove.

Enjoy.

Mark Grey - I Got A Feelin' (Alan Thompson Remix)

Here is a different side to Alan Thompson. In thelate 90s he went on a bit of a cheeky Hardhouse tip. Enjoy.

DJ Sneak - Different Shapes and Sizes (Alan Thompson Remix)

One of the biggest early tracks at Trade for years. A massive Alan Thompson anthem. Here expertly remixed y him.

Another classic MAW tune. Sung by Little Louie Vegas ex wife - the mighty India.

Nuyorican Soul - It's Alright (Roni Size mix)

Another great 'jungle' mix of a smooth Nu Yorican Soul tune. Along with Armands remixes they certainly knew which remixers to choose.

Masters at Work Production mixes.

Uncanny Alliance - I Got My Education (Masters At Work Dub) 1992

A fab and typical MAW dub from the early 90s. I seem to remember Malcolm Duffy @ Trade playing this one.

Madonna - Erotica (Masters At Work Remix) 1992

There is just not enough Madonna on this site. So here is a classic remix of hers by MAW. Its got that lovely intro that MAW seem to be masters at.

Hardrive - deep inside (Classic House) 1993

An absolute classic. Still sounding fresh today. In fact there seems to be an increase in the popularity of NY House, due to people getting bored of that Minimal / circuit sound that's been prevalent for too long.

This tune brings back loads of memories of places like The Zapp in Brighton.  A biggie with John Digweed.

Masters at Work Productions mix.

Here is a little something to bring you up to speed on MAW.  Its a cool mix of their own productions.  Enjoy.

JT - Let Me Groove U - (Extended Mix) 1991

To end the New York House week,  today and tomorrow are going to be dedicated to Master at Work (MAW). For those that don't know how MAW came about here is a bit of MAW cut and pasted from DISCOGS.

"In 1987, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez loaned out the name Masters At Work (a street party alias he was using with Mike Delgado) to Todd Terry for the 1987 singles "Alright Alright" and "Dum Dum Cry". Terry returned the favour one year later by introducing Gonzalez to Little Louie Vega. They then took up the Masters At Work moniker and did rather well out of it."

During the 90s, especially the early 90s MAW where very prolific remixers. Name virtually anyone and they probably remixed them.  They were known for doing multiple remixes of tracks.  There dub remixes were legendary.  Alongside their own original productions. They covered virtually every type of 'dance' genre. although most people know them for their New York House style.

This video was a popular track with Smoking Jo down Trade in 1991 / 1992. This one goes out to Eastlondonboy who spotted on the on Smokin Jo @ Trade 1992 mix Posted a while back.

Expect more videos and mixes throughout the weekend. As Sunday is usually chill out day on the blog I will be focusing more on MAWs New Yorican Soul alias.

Enjoy.

Danny Tenaglia Boxed 1995.

Final post of today.  Another cracking Danny Tenaglia mix from 1995 I think.  For those that don't know.  In the early to mid 90s dance records shops and certain cool clothes outlets were selling these double tapes of top DJs.  The guys behind these tapes then went on to form Global Underground.  This was one of my favourite BOXED tapes.

Enjoy.

Danny Tenaglia - Elements (The Chant)

One of my favourite Danny Tenaglia original productions. A classic that still stands up today.   This brings back loads of memories from Basics in Leeds.  Happy times.

Bette Midler - I'm Beautiful ((Danny Tenaglia Continental Club Mix) 1993

Final Tenaglia remix. This is one of my favourite remixes by him. I had this on a Trade CD that was given out with M8 Magazine in the late 90s. The CD tracklisting was for two seperate mini mixes by Guy Williams and Fergie. At the end of the CD was a 15 minute mix starting with this record. I have never been able to find out who the mini mix was by.  And there are no details on the CD cover.  A Trade mystery.  Until early this year I never knew this was a Bette Middler remix. Oh well.

Modjo - Lady (Danny Tenaglia remix)

At the time this record was out. Only a handful of DJs had copies of this remix. This type of excusivity does not really happen anymore due to the internet.

I love the fact that this remix takes a fairly 'cheesey' vocal house tune and sends it on a different path.

Grace Jones - Feel Up (Danny Tenaglia Remix) .wmv

Its day three in this weeks New York House week. Today I am dedicating it to Danny Tenaglia. To start things off here is one of my favourite remixes by him.

Enjoy.

Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)

Yes I know this isnt from the 90s. but so what. Its one of Frankies all too rare (these days) remixes. Its sung by the amazing Anthony Johnson and has that perfect spacey Knuckles vibe. Enjoy.

Frankie Knuckles & Adeva - Too Many Fish (Satoshi's 12" Mix)

So many happy memories of this being played down the Zapp Club in Brighton on a Saturday in the mid 90s.

THE SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS - The pressure pt 1 - Classic club version

They just don't make them like this anymore.
