Carlo Gambino Interview part 2.

Part 2.

Any stand out memories from your nights at Speed Queen and the Glasshouse?
I’ve had some many great memories being resident for 5 years back then. New years eves and birthdays were always great but for me it was probably when we returned back to The Warehouse after being homeless for a while. I remember turning onto the road to a sea of people. The queue was round the block, it took me about 20 mins just to get into the club. The club literally went off from 10pm until I closed it at 4am, I think I played 30 mins over because the crowd wouldn’t let me go. Kas always used to tell me off but then would come back and say “Just one more then”

Favourite record label?
Now I play totally different stuff so my favourite labels have changed since the days of Speedqueen. Favourite labels now and always will be  Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision, Classic, Drop, Robsoul, ….the list is endless

Did you ever play abroad? If so where?
Yeah as well as playing in the UK I do play abroad. Ive played all over Ibiza, Italy, Holland and I'm playing in the states. Gigs in New York and hopefully Chicago in nov/dec this year

How does clubbing today compare to what it was in the 90s?
Its totally different, they both have a place in my heart though. When I first started going out/djing in the nineties it was all new, fresh, exciting and a hobby really. Then things started to take off  and now its more serious, as it’s a business. I have been playing for 17 years now and I still love to have fun but I'm definitely more wise to the whole scene now.

Favourite chill out record?
Anything off the ‘CafĂ© Del Mar’ CD

I:Cube - Disco Cubism [daft punk mix] [HQ]

One of Carlo Gambinos favourite 90s tunes.

Enjoy.

Carlo Gambino Speed Queen mix 1.

Ive had this mix for nearly fifteen years now.  Its one of my favourite sets and still listen to it today.

It really showcases the funky house sound that was dominant in the late 90s.  It does however, keep that deep vibe that kept good funky house from becoming too cheesy.

Anyone who did the late 90s Saturday marathon of Fibre, Speed Queen, Basics finishing at The Glasshouse will know what to expect from this mix.

Enjoy.

Carlo Gambino Interview Part 1.

This week I'm posting a fantastic interview with one of Leeds best DJs.  He has played pretty much all over, but for the likes of me will always be remembered for his sets at Speed Queen and The Glasshouse.

How did you get into DJing?
I first bought my decks (well my folks did) at 17, I used to play a mixture of stuff and then my friend Paul Kelly got me into all things ‘house’. I used to go to all the raves up and down the country and thought I really want to do this!

First 'proper' club?
First proper club to go to was ‘Wobble’ In Birmingham and ‘Music Factory’ In Sheffield.  I never missed a week for years. Good times….

Favourite 90s clubs to visit?
Again, has to be either Wobble or Music Factory. The Bomb in Nottingham was also amazing. I’ve seen so many great djs there and some of the best times of my life around that period. Before I started djing properly we would go on a road trip to a different club in a different city every week pretty much.

Favourite clubs to play at?
Back to Basics is always special….so is ‘The Supershack’ in Middlesborough. Ive played up and down the uk but these are definitely up there.

Favourite 90s DJs?
Alistair Whitehead! He was a regular at Music Factory, I had just got my decks so was in heaven week after week. He played in Sheffield a lot so it was brilliant. Also the likes of John Digweed, Sasha, Roger Sanchez.
Favourite 90s remixers?
Probably ‘Xpress 2’ to be honest but there’s far to many to name. But every production from these guys was always a winner.

Favourite 90s remixes?
Frankie Knuckles, Derrick Carter, Masters At Work, Deep Dish, Kerri Chandler, DJ Sneak.

Favourite 90s dance records?
Anything from labels like: Strictly Rhythm, Junior Boys Own, Henry Street, Classic, Nervous, Subliminal, Azuli, Positiva,

Larry Levan Live Japan 1991.

And now for something different.  Here is an ultra rare live recording of the legendary Larry Levan.

He was in many peoples opinions the greatest DJ ever.  I never got to experience him due to my age (too young).  But I've enjoyed reading about his colourful life and history.

This mix is predominantly the US House sound that was so big in the early 90s.

Please excuse the poor quality of the recording.  It is over 20 years old!

Anyway hope you enjoy it.
