New Years Nights out

Its that time of year again.  When we are all thinking about what we will be doing tonight at midnight.  Over the years i have tried it all: clubs, bars, family, house parties, restaurants and even in bed asleep.

All of the above have their own merits and negatives.  Below is a list of my more memorable  NYE club nights out:

  • Dance 1992 at Farnborough Rec.  Not a clue on which DJs were on.  I spent most of the time in the house room as never the biggest fan of hardcore.  Most memorable tune of the night.  Zero B - Lock up.  Funniest moment was seeing a friend from Farnham Art College Mcing on the hardcore stage.  Funniest verse was ' Old Mcdonald took an E, E I E I O'.
  • Troll reunion at The Soundshaft 1993.  With DJs Mrs Wood and Blu Peter.  Most memorable tune of the night was the Reactivate tune which sampled the Jaws theme tune.  Imagine a club filled with dry ice, strobe lights and then this Jaws music comes in.  Spooky.
  • Trade 1994 at Turnmills.  Not 100% sure on which DJs where on as the music progression was not the same as a normal night.  Still an amazing night.  Highlights being the live PA by Carol Leeming. I also managed to last over 14 hours of almost constant dancing.  This was also the first night I heard the classic 'Waterfall - Atlantic Ocean".
  • The Zap - Brighton 1995.  The only DJ that I really remember from this night was Phil Perry (Full Circle).  He was very good and a lot harder than I expected.
  • Trade at The Leisure Lounge 1996.   Technically this was actually New Years Day.  We spent nearly four hours queuing up outside the Leisure Lounge from 6am NYD.  As much fun as the queue was who wants to be in one for four hours.  We found out when we got in that the night which had been on before Trade.  Hadn't finished on time.  Then they venue ran out of tickets for the coat check.  when we eventually got in there was nowhere to leave our coats.  All in all we spent max 2 hours in the club.  The journey home with our friend Jo was one of the funniest car journeys Ive ever had.  We drove around the Elephant ans Castle roundabout about 20 times.  Poor Stuart.  Lesson learnt.  Trade at other venues didn't work at this time.
  • The Glasshouse - Leeds 1999.  This is another event that was actually New Years day (2000) not the Eve.  This amazing night took place at Space in Leeds.  The crowd was mainly hardcore Leeds clubbers who had been up since NYE.  Rob Tissera was the standout DJ on the night.  Best records were Eurythmics - sweet Dreams (Hard House mix) and Quake - The day will come (fab vocal trance).
  • Speed Queen  Leeds 2001.  As usual Suzy and Kaz put on an excellent night.  I missed the midnight moment due to being with another group of friends at a fantastic fish restaurant.  To be honest I always find the midnight moment a bit annoying.  So it was actually good to arrive at the club at 1 am.  Best DJ of the night.  Tin Tin of course.  Midnight tune (according to friends) was Lisa Lisa and cult Jam - let the beat hit em (house mix).  My favourite tune was Praised Cats - Shine on me.

Many thanks.

Watch out later for some final TDV mixes.

TONY DE VIT "Burning Up"

Here's a rarely seen video for TDVs - burning Up. It looks a bit rubbish now. But remember its nearly 20 years old and fitted in for that era. Look out for DJ Fergie in the fur coat.

Tony De Vit in the Studio

For those who are into the more technical side of things. Heres a video I found on Youtube. Its TDV giving a tour of his recording studio.

The Age of Love - Tony De Vit remix (Rare) FULL VERSION

Heres another great TDV remix. At the time this was really rare. Its only as time has gone that its easier to get. I still think you cannot beat the Jam and Spoon remix though?

TONY DE VIT IS THE GREATEST DJ OF ALL TIME... BY FERGIE

Its TDV week on the blog. Here is a little something from DJ Fergie giving his view on TDV being the greatest DJ of all time.

Tuesday, 21 December 2010

Ive managed to track down this two part mix (via Facebook).  Its TDV live at Trade in December 1992.  At this point TDV wasn't a resident at Trade.  So I assume that he was a guest on this night.  Whatever the reason its a fab mix.  Its got some of my early favourites on it, like Tribal church by Joey Inferno.

dj zigi dancing on the ceiling - tony de vit remix

And here we have the second video for today. Its a slightly more well know TDV tune. Not one of his big hits but sort of known. This is actually one of my favourite. I think the sample is from the 80s band 'Blancmange?'.

TONY DE VIT - FEEL THE LOVE (ORIGINAL MIX)

Its day two on TDV week. Here we have have the very first released record by the man himself. I'm not sure if this record is that well known. But its got that certain something that makes you know its a TDV tune.

marc almond out there (Tony de Vit remix)

Here's the first TDV video of the week. Not the most well known or obvious choice? That's why I chose it.

Enjoy

Tony de Vit week - Day 1.

As its the week leading up to Christmas I have decided to do something very special.  I'm going to dedicate this week on the blog to the late great Tony De Vit (TDV).  I'm not going to give a full history biography on him.  After all what hasn't been said about him?

I'm going to let the music do the talking.  And to start it off here is a link to his Essential link from January 1995.  There will be further mixes and other goodies added daily this week.

Are you all ready?

Chill Outs Sunday - Future Sound of London Essential Mix.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet today.  Its chill out Sunday again on the blog.  Ive got a real treat for you.  its the first Essential Mix by the Future Sound of London from way back 1993.  The first time I heard this mix I didn't really 'get it'.  However, like a fine wine I've grown into it over the years.

Gabrielle - Forget About The World (Daft Punk Remix) (Download Link)

Ian Pooley - Chord Memory (Daft Punk Remix)

The Chemical Brothers - Life Is Sweet [Daft Punk Remix]

And another.

I-Cube: Disco Cubism (Daft Punk Remix)

And here we go!!

Daft Punk day.

In honour of Daft Punk making it big in Hollywood with their Tr2n soundtrack.  Ive decided to dedicate today to them.

Its been about 15 years since I first heard of Daft Punk.  In that time I have seen them live 3 times.  The first time was in Leeds at a the V97 festival.  They completely destroyed the dance tent (in a good way).  Carl Cox who had the difficult job following them found it hard to keep the crowd.  This was probably not made easier by the fact that The Prodigy were on at the same time.

Anyway back to Daft Punk.  I'm going to post some Daft Punk related video links, don't expect the obvious ones though.  Ending up with a classic Daft Punk mix.
Enjoy.

Smokin Jos top five tunes 1992.

I have one of those types of memories that remembers irrelevant facts.  I work in housing, and for the life of me cannot remember housing laws and policies.  However, ask me Smokin Jos top five tunes from 1992 and for some reason my memory kicks in.

They are as follows.  For the record they show what amazing taste in music she has.  All of them classics down Trade and Chemistry.  All of them are in my list of favourite dance tunes of all time.  All of them bring back memories of being on the dance floor at Trade in the early days.

You tube links to follow.

  • Djaimin - Give you.  Listen out for the 'trippy' piano hook.  When she played this you things were starting to kick up a notch.
  • Bump - I'm rushing.  Classic.  Enough said.
  • U2 - even better than the real thing (Perfecto dub).  For months I never realised this was a U2 record.  Classic remix.
  • Degress of motion - Shine on.  Happy happy sing a long tune.  One of the rare vocal tunes at Trade.
  • Glam - Hells party.  If theres hell below...  The first time I heard this was actually at the Rhythm Station in Aldershot.

Smokin Jo live 1993

Not 100% sure where this set was recorded from.  It could be from Trade as it has a number of Trade records on there.  However, i suspect that this was from one of the other many clubs she was playing in at this time.  This was the period when her career really took off.

At the time she was playing on a regular basis at Trade, Basics, Cream and all the other superclubs.  She was also one of the firat big UK DJs to take off in Ibiza.  I always preffered her sets at Trade as they were just that bit tougher than the other places.

I remeber looking at the club listings for 1992 (or maybe 1993) and along with Fat Tony (who was also listed everywhere)  she was playing at nigh on 8 clubs that night.  Talk about popular.

Anyway enjoy this set.

Smokin Jos shortened biography.

Jo’s story began in 1990 when after years of attending many of the early raves and illegal parties she noticed a distinct lack of female DJs. As a massive fan of this exciting new music that was sweeping the nation, Jo decided to buy some decks and started mixing. From those early days it was always the deeper side of things Jo preferred, soulful sounding tracks that take you on a journey, no matter what style she plays from Techno to House it has to have meaning and a bassline to kill.
Taking her stage name from the boxer Smoking Joe Fraser, Jo felt it provided ambiguity over an obviously feminine name as at the time it was seen as a novelty to be a female DJ (how times change!) It’s thanks to women like Jo that these shifts in attitudes have taken place.
While working in the Gaultier shop in London’s Soho, Jo made her first mix tapes and gave them to friends and customers to gauge their response. The reactions were better than expected and her first gigs quickly followed at fashion after-show parties. In 1991 Jo was given a chance to play at London’s legendary after-hours party Trade at Turnmills. Seizing the opportunity she smashed the club, blending her mixture of deep house and techno and as a result was given a residency that lasted three years.
Trade was her stepping stone into the big league. At that time Trade was the only after hours in London: all the promoters, Dj’s and industry people came down to party religiously each week so in no time at all Jo was being booked to play at club events like Puscha, Boys Own, Tribal Gathering, Back to Basics, Cream and Full Circle. These gigs were the basis for her winning DJ Magazine’s highly coveted DJ of the Year Award (she is still the only female DJ to have ever won this award).

Hyper Go Go High Original Mix classic house HQ

I'm afraid I cannot find the Smokin Jo remix of this tune. This was a record that she played week in and out at Trade. Its pretty much down to her that it became such an anthem as most other Djs hadn't picked up on it.

Zero B - Spinning Wheel (Rumple mix)

Another old school Smokin Jo remix.

Andronicus - Make You Whole (Smokin' Jo's Remix)

Ive been a bit quiet this week on the blog so got a real treat today. I'm dedicating today to one of my favourite old school DJs, Smokin Jo.

She was one of the first residents at Trade. Her set was always after Malcolm Duffys. She'd come on at approx 5-6am. Her style at that time was a progression of US house, Italio, progressive leading onto early hardcore.

I have many of her sets so will be posting them on the blog in time. I will be posting more video links today then ending with one of my favourite mixes from her.

Enjoy.

Enjoy

As its Mixmaster Morris day.  Ive had a bit of a search on the Net and found this cracking 2 plus hour live set from him.  Its not a set from the 90s.  But it features music from a variety of decades.  Its such a perfect Sunday afternoon mix that I couldn't resist putting on here for you all.

Barbarella-Barbarella(The Irresistible Force Mix)

Heres another lovely Mixmaster Morris remix. This was also remixed by Deep Dish in the late 90s.

The original is an early record by Sven Vath.

Enjoy.

Sunday Chill out. Coldcut Autumn Leaves Chillout Remix Irresistable Force Mix Video

Yes its its Sunday Chillout today. How quick has this week gone?

I'm going to dedicate today to Mixmaster Morris. He is that rare breed of DJ. A gay chillout/ambient/drum and base all all things electronica one. Yes that's right. He not a hard house or funky house DJ.

Ive got some great mixes of his that will be posted onto the blog at some point.

The only time I actually heard him play was at Trade of all places. It was at the Pride afterparty in the mid 90s. And he was given his own chill out room. It was a bit bizarre at first hearing jazz and jungle being played at Trade. But good on the promoters for being open minded enough to do this.

As a little side note. Mixmaster morris and myself where both wearing Dexter Wong blue rubber trousers that night at Trade. Every time he saw me he kept on coming up and chatting about this . Nice friendly bloke.

This is a little something to celebrate 2000 views on the blog. This is one of my favourite ever Sharp remixes. It was massive down Trade. Listen out for the word 2000 repeated. A tenuous link I know!

Josh Wink mix mid 90s.

Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk)

This is probably the most popular and well known Josh Wink tune. This original version is the best. ignore all the dodgy remixes though. Although the Sharp Boys did a cracking remix of it.

Size 9 - I'm Ready (Remix)

This is probably my favourite Josh Wink record. Massive down the Zapp Club in Brighton. DJ Paulette who was the residant DJ on a Saturday used to play this every week. She used to mix in Josh Winxs - Higher State into the hiphop breakdown. She also used to do a Jane Fonda style workout dance behind the decks to this one.

Happy days.

Winx - Don't Laugh (Tony de Vit Mix)

Final remix of Dont laugh. Seem to remember this being played by TDV in the Trade tent at Gay pride sometime in the mid 90s. One of my favourite TDV mixes.

Don't Laugh (Richie Hawtin mix) by josh wink

Heres the Richie Hawtin remix of dont laugh. Very deep. Dont think I ever heard this mix out in a club though.

Josh Wink - Don't Laugh (Live Raw Mix)

The first of a number of Josh Winx videos today. Hope you enjoy them.
