Thomas Foley Interview Part 1.

Thomas Foley Interview Part 1.

Thomas Foley, who along with James Horrocks started up and ran React Recordings. They also ran the legendary Garage @ Heaven night.

Thomas has kindly agreed to be interviewed for this blog.

Part 1.

What clubs did you promote?
Garage 90-96 and Wildlife 98-99 both at Heaven.
Which DJs did you employ in your clubs?
Daz Saund,Trevor Rockcliffe, Blu Peter and Mrs Wood as residents at Garage plus numerous guest dj's. Notable guests included Frank De Wulf, Paul Van Dyk and Mark Spoon and PA's by Ramirez, Praga Khan and GTO. The Upstairs floor had numerous residents including Vicki Edwards, Princess Julia and David Drew from Catch A Groove (Soho record shop)
Wildlife residents included Danny Rampling. Guests inlcuded Carl Cox.
Garage was very cutting edge and pioneered the Euro trance and tribal and NY house sounds. Wildflife was a little more mainstream underground and press led, booking big name dj's.

Who were your favourite DJs?
All our residents
What clubs did you visit and find inspiring in the 90s?
I really enjoyed going to Germany and clubbing in Cologne, Frankfurt and the legendary E Work and Tresor in Berlin. Some of the owners of E Work came to Garage. The sound systems in Germany were excellent. I liked Mayday as it was only one huge room playing trance, so everyone was into that sound. In London I had some great evenings at Troll.
What records labels did you work for?
Danceyard which was owned by James H and Sue Macauley, then Dave Pearce's Reachin label and then React
What DJs and artists did you work with?
James can give Danceyard roster. Reachin had Boneshakers. React - view releases on Wikipedia

Blu Peter @ Garage 1993.

Here we have a real bit of history.  I live recording of Blu Peter at the legendary React night Garage @ Heaven.

This set from from the time when Blu Peter was just starting to get his name heard.  You can tell from the mix that the the nu energy sound was just starting to kick in with the more hard edged music that had been so popular in the early 90s.

Its the only set I have live from that club.  So if anyone has any please get in touch.

Enjoy.

Blu Peter - James Has Kittens

Wow this is a Blu Peter track that had sort of bypassed me. I love the use of drum and bass. the James in question is James Horrocks. One of the people who started up React.

Enjoy.

Blu Peter - I Bring You Luv (Haunting Trance Mix)

One of my favourite Blu Peter tracks. I love the sample from the Simpsons X Files episode.

Blu Peter - Funky Suite (F.C. Kahuna Headstart Remix)

Here we have another classic Blu Peter Track. Enjoy.

Candi Staton You Got The Love ( Original 1986 Version )

Although its React Recordings month on the blog, I still wanted to try and have the Chill Out Sundays. Its been a bit difficult to find things for today. But I have managed to find a bit of a treat for you.

We all know that The Source feat Candi Staton is one the the biggest selling Recordings releases ever. Hell it even ended up on the final episode of Sex and the City.

Here we have the very original version. Before The Source put it together with Frankie Knuckes 'Your Love'.

The original has a nice disco Paradise Garage vibe to it.

YOU GOT THE LOVE ( Candi Staton) DJ EREN'S ORIGINAL MIX

Oh go on then you twisted my arm. Here is the version of the song we all know and love.

Enjoy.

Candi Staton You Got the Love Glastonbury

Here is a fab live performance of this classic. 2010 Glastonbury was the year that Florence and the Machine were everywhere with this song. Although I liked their version it cannot compete with the Candi Staton sung versions.

I would love to have seen a Candi and Florence sing together though.  Im surprised they didnt when both at Glastonbury.

Enjoy.

Mrs. Wood - The Awakening

Another banging tune from Mrs Wood. Enjoy.

Madame Dubois - Road Rage MkII

A banging tune from Mrs Woods French alter ego.

Mrs Wood Essential Mix 1997.

Continuing React month.  Here we have one of my all time favourite Essential mixes from HRHardcore Mrs Wood the Queen of React recordings.

Whats interesting about this mix.  is that whilst the rest of the country was going Bouncy Hard House mad.  She stuck to her underground 'Techno' sound.

For those that never got to hear her at FF or Garage.  You certainly missed out.

Expect loads more Mrs Wood goodies over the next few weeks.  Plus Mrs Woods Jukebox.  Filled with her own personnal favourite records.

React Showcase 1995.

Ive been a bit slack the past week or so.  The usual story, busy, busy, busy at work and technical issues at home.

August is React Recordings month on the blog.  So here I have a real treat for you.  Its the React Showcase for DJ Magazines label of the year free CD.  Its was a real honour for React to be chosen as label of the year.  Previous winners included Strictly Rhythm and Unity Records.

At the time I felt that this mid 90s period for React was its golden period.   The hard house, trance and techno sound being played at Reacts Friday night club night Garage was spreading throughout the rest of club and rave land.

Anyway down to business.  The CD had three separate mixes by Blu Peter, Mrs Wood and Stephen React.  I listened to the CD for the first time in years this week.  I really think that the music on this CD still sounds fresh today.  In fact most modern dance music sounds dated compared to what is on this CD.

Anyway click the links below.

G.T.O day on the blog.

Anyone who wants to know more about G.T.O follow the DISCOGS link below.

http://www.discogs.com/artist/GTO?anv=G.T.O

GTO - Wonderful

A lovely trancey spacey tune from the very versatile G.T.O.

Technohead - I Wanna Be A Hippy (Dreadlock Holiday) (Ilsa Gold Mix)

Enough already of this record. I do like this mix by Ilsa Gold though. i like the Desmond Dekker samples.

Technohead - I Wanna Be A Hippy (I Wanna) - 1995 Mokum Records / DB 1770 6

Now this is more like it. Remixed by the might Troll / Trade / Garage twins - Daz Saund and Trevor Rockcliffe.

Enjoy.

Technohead I Wanna Be A Hippy (TOTP) 1996

Ha ha. I just had to post this. Technohead on TOTP. I love the way they have had to edit out half the words.

I wanna be a hippie (acoustic)

Wow. I just found this on YOUTUBE. Its actually quite good.

Enjoy.

Technohead - I Wanna Be A Hippy

This is probably the most commercial G.T.O release ever. I seem to remember it was number one in Holland for ever, and even made the top ten in the UK.

I always quite liked this record. It has elements of what years later became the Bounce hard House sound.

GTO -Elevation Troll Mix 'Reactivate Vol 4'

This is probably my favourite G.T.O record ever. When they played it at Trade it always felt like a call to arms.

Technohead - The Passion.

Here with have another fave of mine from G.T.O. This time in their Technohead guise. I awlays loved their Technohead compilations.

Enjoy.

GTO's - The Bullfrog 'Reactivate Vol 2'

This was from Reactivate 2, which was the first React record I ever bought. I absolutely loved this tune.

More people should make records with frogs on. At some point I'm going to dedicate a whole day to 90s techno records that were made up of weird samples.

Enjoy

G.T. O. - Listen to the rhythm flow

Ive been having a scoot around DISCOGS and according to them G.T.Os - Listen to the rhythm flow was the first React Recordings release. I always thought it was The Source - You got the love.

That record actually came out on Truleove Records which was a sub label of React I think. gets a bit confusing.

Anyway. Here is the official video for the first G.T.O release. I'm sure one of the guys in the video is Daz Saund.

Look out for more G.T.O goodies throughout the day.

Enjoy.

August is React Records month on the blog.

Its been very quiet on the blog the past few weeks.  Well I intend to make up for lost time and dedicate a whole month to the mighty React Records.

During the 90s React pretty much sound tracked my life.  The early Reactivate compilations highlighted the emerging Techno and trance sounds being played at Troll, Trade and Garage.

As the 90s progressed the label still championed the harder sounds.  However, it started to showcase a more diverse sound.  Taking in house, Detroit techno, handbag, hardbad, Tesko, hardcore, ambient and hip hop.

With the exception of the massive selling Bonkers Hardcore series.  React opened my eyes to a more diverse music genres.  Bonkers was just not really my cup of tea.  I always felt that Happy Hardcore was a bit too young for me.

Throughout August the blog will have the following:

  • An interview with Thomas Foley.  One of the founders of the label.
  • Videos of my favourite React releases.
  • The start of 'Mrs Woods Jukebox'.
  • DJ mixes from Blu Peter, Mrs Wood, Jose Padilla and other React related DJs.
  • Images from the labels fantastic groundbreaking record covers.
Enjoy.
