Carlo Gambino - Interview part 4.

Last weeks Carlo Gambino proved a real success.  Over a 1000 views - thanks To Carlo and all who viewed.

Carlo certainly lived up to his name as the nicest man in dance music.  The final part of the interview was a question asking him about his ideal party ever, imagine you have a Tardis and have no limits to your part.

Carlo Gambinos ultimate party.

DC10 vs Paradise Garage....on a beach.

Djs would include all the DC10 crew plus legends like Larry Levan, MAW, Frankie Knuckles.

24 hour party....going through every genre possible! That would be some party.

Tall Paul @ Trade May 1994.

Here we have a massively rare live set from Tall Paul @ Trade.  Tall Paul was the original end of night (day) DJ at Trade.

Although his sets were hard, they still had that uplifting vibe.  For many the early Hooj Choons sound epitomised Tall Pauls sets.

Enjoy

Carlo Gambino Interview part 3 .

Here we have the final part of the interview with Carlo Gambino.

Enjoy.

Did you ever produce any records?

Yes Ive produced a lot over the last 6/7 years on various labels worldwide. I now own and run my own label called ‘Midnight Social Recordings’. I m now on the second release with the label, plus I have a host of things coming out in 2012 on various labels.

Longest set?

I did an 8hr set back to back with someone, which was great. But the longest set has to be at a house party after id just played for 2 hours at a club. I then went back to a house and played for about 10 hours. I went through every record in my box, I played both sides and all the mixes about 3 times. Every time I looked up the house was full of different people.

Worst club played at?

Do I have to tell you…….ha. Seeing is believing! Some horrible little place in Doncaster. My friend was supposed to be playing and got ill so I did it for him. I got asked for Take That and RnB all night…this was supposed to be a ‘House’ club.

Favourite Leeds club?

The Warehouse without question always will be my number 1! It Looks and sounds even better now after the massive re-furb.

Favourite Leeds DJ?

There’s only one…..Back to Basics hero ‘Ralph Lawson’. A true pioneer in house music today and a nice guy too.

Do you still play out? If so where and what style of music do you play nowadays?

I play all over the place still, up and down the country. I guest at various places like I always have done and I also co-promote a night called ‘Lip Service’. We have been doing bi-monthly parties for over a year and these are set to continue.

I play across the board but mainly deep and tech house with a bit of nu-disco for good measure. Playing the same genre all the time would inevitably get boring, I grew up on The Specials, The Police, Bob Marley and loads of funk so my taste has always been varied including house music.

Carlo Gambino Interview part 2.

Part 2.

Any stand out memories from your nights at Speed Queen and the Glasshouse?
I’ve had some many great memories being resident for 5 years back then. New years eves and birthdays were always great but for me it was probably when we returned back to The Warehouse after being homeless for a while. I remember turning onto the road to a sea of people. The queue was round the block, it took me about 20 mins just to get into the club. The club literally went off from 10pm until I closed it at 4am, I think I played 30 mins over because the crowd wouldn’t let me go. Kas always used to tell me off but then would come back and say “Just one more then”

Favourite record label?
Now I play totally different stuff so my favourite labels have changed since the days of Speedqueen. Favourite labels now and always will be  Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision, Classic, Drop, Robsoul, ….the list is endless

Did you ever play abroad? If so where?
Yeah as well as playing in the UK I do play abroad. Ive played all over Ibiza, Italy, Holland and I'm playing in the states. Gigs in New York and hopefully Chicago in nov/dec this year

How does clubbing today compare to what it was in the 90s?
Its totally different, they both have a place in my heart though. When I first started going out/djing in the nineties it was all new, fresh, exciting and a hobby really. Then things started to take off  and now its more serious, as it’s a business. I have been playing for 17 years now and I still love to have fun but I'm definitely more wise to the whole scene now.

Favourite chill out record?
Anything off the ‘CafĂ© Del Mar’ CD
