U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing (Trance Mix)

This is another 'classic' from the early days. Smoking Jo played it each week for months. It really brings back many happy memories listening to this. and to think its a U2 tune.

Enjoy.

Afrika Bambaataa - Feeling Irie (Club Mix)

Continuing Trade month. Here is a real forgotten 'classic' from the early days of the club. I seem to remember Tony de Vit playing this each week for a while.

It took me years to find the name of the record.

Enjoy.

Daz Saund Live DJ Set Mayday 1996

The mighty Daz Saund live at Mayday 1996.

Black & Brown - Lick It

At the end of this month Trade celebrates it 21st birthday. There cannot be many club nights that have lasted this long.

In tribute I will be dedicating this month to Trade on the blog. The highlight will be an amazing interview with DJ Rosco. One of the Trade residents for over ten years now.

Today is all about Daz Saund. One of the original DJs.

This track was by him and Trevor Rockcliffe who was also one of the original Trade residents.

Love, love, love this tune.

Daz Saund @ Mayday 1996.

Daz Saund was always one of my favourite DJs in the 90s.  His sets at Trade, Troll, DTPM and Garage were always amazing.  He was probably one of the first DJs I heard playing full on Techno.

He still plays out (see the Megawoof brand).  But plays a lot more Housier style these days.  Catch him at the Trade 21st Birthday party later this month @ Pulse in London.  I'm hoping he will be playing one of his all too rare retro Techno sets.

Anyway here's a little something to wet your appetite.  An amazing set from him at Mayday 1996.

Enjoy.

Tribute to Alfredo part 1.

Well its closing party week in Ibiza.  I so wish I was there.  Heres a fab mix I found whilst searching for Balearic goodies.

Its part 1 of a series of tributes to Alfredo done by Nathan.  Who I think is a London based dj?  he's done a whole series of these alfredo tributes.  I hope to post more links in future weeks as they really are very good.

Im not going to post the track listing as this is the type of mix that each record choice is a real surprise.

I suggest that you also follow the link to the blog which originally posted the mix.  Its a cool blog which has loads of mixes ranging from old school, indie to rave.  there are some real gems on there.  the people behind this site also put on some really cool old school nights in and around Brighton.  keep your eyes peeled.

Thomas Foley Interview Part 3.

Favourite 90s dance records non react.

Oh so many; Yello The Race,

Favourite records released on React?

I personally liked about 80% of our releases. James pioneered the Dope on Plastic, Bonkers and D&B releases which were not genres I had a feel for.

Which is your favourite Reactivate mix? And why?

Ia it true that when Mrs Wood was pregnant you bought her a special chair for her in the DJ booth at Garage?

No. She's a strong Yorkshire lass!

Age of Love - Stella mix. Is this one of the greatest records of all time? Also, one of the greatest mixes of all time? How did this remix come about?

I first heard the Boeing mix being played by Marc Andrews at Heaven (who I used to manage) and thought it could be interesting to remix. I contacted Mark Spoon who also said it was one of his favourite tracks and he would like to remix it. I went to Mayday in Cologne with GTO who were performing at Mayday and collected the DAT at the event from Mark Spoon and stuffed in my pocket, then went to Amsyterdam to stay with Jeroen from Fierce Ruling Diva and heard it on his sound system for the first time. Sounded good however not until we cut an acitate and heard it in the club did I realise how big a track it would be. Its a song witten by 2 Italians, signed to a Belgian label, Diki, remixed by 2 Germans and then released on a Brit label - truly a European dance record.

Do you listen to any 90s dance music today?

The last track I listened to was Jam and Spoon Follow Me on You Tube - still awesome

I seem to remember that React did some nights in Ibiza. Is this correct? If so where was it, who played and was it a success?

We had a React night in Pasha I think in 95 and went back the following year as guests of Manumission, which was a relationship which did not work out.

Any funny stories you feel like sharing?

The greatest laughs at the label were when Steven Doherty joined as the tea boy. His excuses for not coming into work on Monday's were legendary. He then went onto fame and fortune as a dj using the moniker Steven React and then The Sharp Boys.

The Reactivate series had a very strong graphic image. Which was your favourite cover and why?

I think Reactivate 9 with the shark and alarmed little fish. This was designed by the wonderful people at Designers Republic with a lot of input from me. I suggested the little fish which added an extra dimension. The picture was later used for the cover of a corporate report about the food industry and the big fish (supermarkets) gobbling up the smaller retailers. We has lots of fun choosing the sea critters. One witty comment at the time of Reactivate 10 was "have your got a case of the Reactivate 10's?" meaning crabs!

Mrs Wood Teaches Technohead Mix.

Ive been so slack on here for the past few weeks.  I've had problems with my Mac.  Had to get a new one.  Also started a new job.

Well I'm back with bells on.   First I will be finishing the React month.  So watch out for the final parts of the Thomas Foley interview, along with related videos and mixes.

The mix below is one which I found on Banging Tunes.  its a mix up of all the classic Mrs Wood and Technohead tunes.

Thomas Foley interview Part 2.

Thomas Foley Interview Part 2.

React was well known for its Techno roots, but became more diverse with time. What other styles did you champion, and what was the reasoning behind this?
Good question - James and I had different tastes. I had fairly narrow taste in techno, trance and tribal house genres. James was much more broad minded and sign projects like Dope On Plastic which was a genre I did not have a feel for. I was the "Technohead"! My dj signings included Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier and Deep Dish. Some projects were a joint effort (me and James) like Carl Cox and Cafe Del Mar. James handled all D&B and happy hardcore releases. James was also very much into house and techno so we worked more closely on the A&R for these projects. Later on I signed a serioes of world music albums (Arabesque and Africanesque) with Momo (of the London restaurant) who was very knowledgeable and fascinating to work with.

What was your favourite style of music from the 90s?
My biggest influence in around 1990 was the R&S label from Belgium. My ambition was to release a single as good as R&S - that was the driver behind Age Of Love which was good enough to be on R&S (in my opinion) The Reactivate series was also created to showcase the Belgian techno sound and then later releases from Holland and Germany and a few USA tracks.

React was a big champion of Happy Hardcore. The Bonkers records were massive sellers. Did you actually like this style of music?
JAMES

What were you favourite non Reactivate mixes?
Carl Cox FACT, Jeff Mills Live at the Liquid Rooms Tokyo, Deep Dish Yoshiesque and Blu Peter Reactivate mixes, also Blu Peter and Mrs Wood Bitter and Twisted.

Biggest selling records?
Compilations - Cafe Del Mar 1-3, Carl Cox FACT, the Reactivate and Bonkers series
Singles - The Source feat Candi Staton "U Got The Love"

Most enduring records from the React label?
I think the Age Of Love Jam and Spoon remix stands the test of time. Cafe del Mar albums are classics
